This piece is a tribute to my Scottish and Māori roots. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling back to Scotland for work and holidays trying to bridge that connection. One thing that really stood out to me was the red in the tartan, which represents the blood of our Scottish ancestors and how similar the weaving techniques are to our Māori Kākahu (garments).
In this piece I used black to honour those who came before us, red for the living, and white for the future generations all tied together with the Puhoro pattern to harness that energy and document a visual representation of our whakapapa on both sides for the next generations.
